Day 25 - St Andrews and Edinburgh

Monday started with sunny skies and mild winds.  We have been given a hurricane warning for tonight.  Apparently there is Hurricane Gonzalo that hit Canada, and this is tapering off over Scotland tonight and tomorrow morning.
We pack an overnight bag and head out towards St Andrews and then Edinburgh.  The journey is smooth and we arrive in St Andrews, which is this most beautiful little university town (where Catherine and Prince William met and studied together). We visited the ancient cathedral which is in ruins but amazingly beautiful.

The town is on the edge of the North Sea and has a beautiful old harbour area.

We then drive towards Edinburgh. I am excited to get there.  We drive over the huge Forth Road Bridge over the Firth of Forth.

Further across is the impressive Forth Bridge built in 1890.

We are headed to the harbour area in Leith where the Royal Yacht "Brittania" has been moored since it was decommissioned by the Government in 1997.  We took the tour on board.  It is quite beautiful and yet cosy, not too ostentatious.  Worth seeing, and perhaps walking where royalty has walked!

After catching a quick bite for lunch, we head slightly out of the city to our castle hotel for the night.

Melville Castle was built in the 1700's and after many renovations, it was opened as a luxury hotel and wedding venue.

Our room is quaint and comfortable.  Dinner is superb with Paul starting with the Terrine of Ayeshire Bacon and Black Pudding and I started with the Salmon Mousse... both delicious.  For the main, Paul had the Daube of Scottish Beef and I had the Smoked Haddock.  Both were really excellent.  What a lovely dinner.

We are now back in our room updating our blog, so you can share our holiday with us.

Tomorrow will be an early start as we have much to do in the old town of Edinburgh.

Good night.
